As Rolling Stones tickets go on sale for the 2011 tour, the young man many credit with creating the image and mythos of the Rolling Stones, ex-manager Andrew Loog Oldham, has been discovered in Bogotá, Colombia, and guess what he’s up to…yeah, he’s managing rock bands! Oldham was a sprightly 19 year old in 1963 when he seized on the idea to exploit the simmering fears of a nation. Oldham built a “bad boy” image for the band who became the greatest in the world. “Would you let your daughter marry a Rolling Stone?” was the question he asked the press, and they ate it up. One look at Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and an antithesis to the clean-cut Beatles exploded in Brits’ imaginations. The Rolling Stones tickets were selling to a huge audience overnight, and the swinging 60s had the perfect pin-up boys to spearhead a rebellious era. These days Oldham is living in the Colombian Capital and managing acts like Colombian singer Juan Galeano, who recently released his single, “Pilgrim” (“Peregrino “, in Spanish).
The Rolling Stones 2011 tour will soon be underway and people are wondering if Oldham will be taking in a show. Meanwhile the original Stones manager is happy to oversee the doings of Ratones Paranoicos, a Colombian band he says are “Just like the Rolling Stones”. Oldham was the driving force that made the Rolling Stones what they were, a sexual engine that drove itself around the world providing satisfaction to millions of rock fans and international media. Today, Oldham is 66-years old, married to Colombian actress and model Esther Farfan, and still looking youthful. His love of the “scene” had him almost dead on more than one occasion and by how own admission he was “out to lunch” from the 60s to the 90s. Andrew Loog Oldham is still rollin’ though, and we hope to bump into him somewhere along the Rolling Stones schedule in 2011!
