Keith Richards has been photographed in many flamboyant costumes as one half of the notorious Glimmer Twins, so playing a corsair hunting the mythical Fountain of Youth should be second nature to him. In his second appearance in the Pirates of the Caribbean as Captain Teague, Richards expects to be on the receiving end of frequent jibes about his “human cockroach” status as one of rock’s survivors.
“You can’t be vegetarian and straight and play rock ‘n’ roll,” Richards once famously said, and boy did he exemplify that one.
Keith is, for many, THE Rolling Stone, and it is his trademark honkin’ riffs that make a Stones song instantly recognizable. The baddest of rock ‘n’ roll’s bad boys, Keith has mellowed somewhat in recent years. Approaching 68 years old, he leaves a catalog of mayhem in his wake. Aside from the well-publicized drug and legal issues, he’s been in some wild relationships and even fell from a tree a few years ago, suffering injuries that required cranial surgery.
Keith’s autobiographical book, “Life”, is currently selling well, in both hardback and paperback. It has received great reviews from the newspapers and the New York Times went so far as to say it is “intense, elemental, utterly distinctive and achingly, emotionally direct.” Just like the sounds that issue from Keith’s guitar, right?

Hey Stones fans, Mick Jagger has joined another band! You read that right; the swaggering frontman of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world has gone off and formed a supergroup with Damian Marley, Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics and Joss Stone. The supergroup is called Super Heavy, and it also contains Indian film composer and musician, A.R. Rahman. Each artist has a very distinctive sound, but this will enhance the fusion effect. The group stirred into life a couple of years ago, when Stewart contacted Jagger from his home in Jamaica, while several neighborhood sound systems blasted out several different kinds of music.
“I live in Lime Hall right above St. Ann’s Bay. It’s kind of the jungle,” Stewart explained, “and sometimes I’d hear three sound systems all playing different things. I always love that, along with Indian orchestras. I said to Mick, ‘How could we make a fusion?’ We were talking about an experiment, and then we started talking about voices. It was all born from that conversation.”
From little acorns, great jungles grow. Over a year back the foursome met in an LA recording studio, with no prepared ideas. They simply jammed together and songs emerged from the chaos. Even the band’s name came from an improv vocal session by Marley, who, according to Stewart, “was just singing ‘Heavy, heavy, heavy, heavy, super heavy’. We thought that sounded good and it sort of stuck with us.” Now, the buzz is about Super Heavy tour tickets instead of Rolling Stones tickets, as a wide variety of music fans will want to see how this band of outlaws sounds live. It’s not clear when or if Super Heavy will go on tour, but it’s hard not to see this as a chance for Mick to rehearse some live material prior to the Stones 50th Anniversary tour scheduled for 2012.
Don’t get caught napping. Mick Jagger is in Super Heavy with the son of Bob Marley, the world’s leading film composer, one of the world’s most exciting soul singers and one half of the Eurythmics. That’s a big deal, and I for one cannot wait to hear this unlikely fusion. I anticipate something like Stewart heard through his open window two years ago, with some Indian orchestra grandness thrown in for good measure. Bookmark this site and return soon for more news on the formation and music of Super Heavy – Mick Jagger’s new band!

As Rolling Stones tickets go on sale for the 2011 tour, the young man many credit with creating the image and mythos of the Rolling Stones, ex-manager Andrew Loog Oldham, has been discovered in Bogotá, Colombia, and guess what he’s up to…yeah, he’s managing rock bands! Oldham was a sprightly 19 year old in 1963 when he seized on the idea to exploit the simmering fears of a nation. Oldham built a “bad boy” image for the band who became the greatest in the world. “Would you let your daughter marry a Rolling Stone?” was the question he asked the press, and they ate it up. One look at Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and an antithesis to the clean-cut Beatles exploded in Brits’ imaginations. The Rolling Stones tickets were selling to a huge audience overnight, and the swinging 60s had the perfect pin-up boys to spearhead a rebellious era. These days Oldham is living in the Colombian Capital and managing acts like Colombian singer Juan Galeano, who recently released his single, “Pilgrim” (“Peregrino “, in Spanish).
The Rolling Stones 2011 tour will soon be underway and people are wondering if Oldham will be taking in a show. Meanwhile the original Stones manager is happy to oversee the doings of Ratones Paranoicos, a Colombian band he says are “Just like the Rolling Stones”. Oldham was the driving force that made the Rolling Stones what they were, a sexual engine that drove itself around the world providing satisfaction to millions of rock fans and international media. Today, Oldham is 66-years old, married to Colombian actress and model Esther Farfan, and still looking youthful. His love of the “scene” had him almost dead on more than one occasion and by how own admission he was “out to lunch” from the 60s to the 90s. Andrew Loog Oldham is still rollin’ though, and we hope to bump into him somewhere along the Rolling Stones schedule in 2011!
